How to calculate your KDP royalty

   Choose your format

   Pick Paperback or Hardcover for a printed book, or Kindle ebook for a digital book, and for paperback pick the Amazon store you are pricing for. The royalty math is different for each: both print formats pay 50% or 60% of list price (60% from a threshold the store sets) minus printing cost, and hardcover costs considerably more to print; Kindle pays 70% or 35% with no printing cost.

   Set the interior and page count (print formats)

   For paperback, choose black & white, groundwood, standard color, or — on Amazon.com — premium color. For hardcover, choose black ink or premium color. Then pick your trim size on either tab — a large trim, wider than 6.12″ or taller than 9″, costs more to print in both formats — and enter your page count: paperback runs 24–828 pages, hardcover 75–550.

   Type the price you plan to list the book at on Amazon. For Kindle, also enter the file size in MB so the 70% delivery cost is included.

KDP paperback printing cost, by Amazon store

Printing cost is a fixed amount plus a per-page charge, set by your interior type, your trim size and the store you sell in. Each store charges in its own currency — KDP does not convert a dollar price. Every store has two rows: regular trim, and large trim — anything wider than 6.12" or taller than 9", such as 7×10 or 8.25×11 — which prints for more in every store and every interior. Hardcover has its own rates in the table below. The first two columns are black ink on white or cream paper; the groundwood column is the same ink on cheaper, bulkier paper, with both of its bands in one cell.

Royalty on Amazon stores is 50% or 60% of list price minus this printing cost, and the price where 60% starts is set by the store: $9.99 on Amazon.com, €9.99 in the euro stores, £7.99 on Amazon.co.uk, CA$13.99 on Amazon.ca, A$13.99 on Amazon.com.au, ¥1,000 on Amazon.co.jp, PLN 40 on Amazon.pl and SEK 110 on Amazon.se. A dash in the standard-color column means KDP publishes no standard-color rate for that store. Premium color is not in the table: KDP prints it in every store, but only the Amazon.com rate has been read against KDP’s page, so that is the only one priced here — a flat $3.60 from 24 to 40 pages, then $1.00 + $0.065/page to 828 on a regular trim, and $4.20 then $1.00 + $0.08/page on a large one. Kindle ebooks pay 70% (from $2.99 to $12.99, minus a ~$0.15/MB delivery fee) or 35% outside that band, with no printing cost; hardcover and Kindle here are Amazon.com only.

KDP hardcover printing cost (Amazon.com)

Hardcover prints from 75 to 550 pages, in black ink or premium color, and KDP’s hardcover rates page lists regular and large trim side by side, so this table does too — large is anything wider than 6.12″ or taller than 9″. Black ink is a flat rate on short books and per-page from there; premium color is per-page across the whole range.

KDP publishes a flat band of 75–108 pages and a per-page band of 110–550, and prints no rate at all for a 109-page book. This calculator prices 109 with the per-page formula — the dearer of the two readings — which is why the table above starts its second band at 109. Hardcover royalty is the same 50/60 split as paperback, and Amazon.com caps a hardcover list price at $250.

How is the Amazon KDP paperback royalty calculated?

For sales on Amazon stores, KDP pays a tiered royalty rate since June 2025: 60% at and above a list price the store sets, 50% below it. That price is $9.99 on Amazon.com, €9.99 in the euro stores, but £7.99 on Amazon.co.uk, CA$13.99 on Amazon.ca, ¥1,000 on Amazon.co.jp and PLN 40 on Amazon.pl — it is a fact about the currency, not one number everywhere. Your royalty = (list price × rate) − printing cost. The printing cost depends on page count, interior type, trim size and the store you sell in. Example: a 200-page black-and-white paperback priced at $12.99 on Amazon.com costs about $3.40 to print, so the royalty is ($12.99 × 0.60) − $3.40 = $7.79 − $3.40 = $4.39 per sale. Sales through Expanded Distribution (non-Amazon retailers) pay 40% instead of the 50–60% store rate.

How much does KDP charge to print a paperback?

KDP printing cost = a fixed cost + (page count × a per-page cost), based on the interior type, the trim size and the store. Every figure below is Amazon.com, with the regular-trim price first and the large-trim price second — large being anything wider than 6.12″ or taller than 9″. For black & white on white or cream paper: books of 24–109 pages are a flat $2.30, or $2.84 on a large trim, and books of 110 pages and up are $1.00 + ($0.012 × page count), or $1.00 + ($0.017 × page count) large. For standard color it is $1.00 + ($0.0255 × page count), or $1.00 + ($0.0402 × page count) on a large trim. Premium color, which this calculator prices for Amazon.com only, is a flat $3.60 from 24 to 40 pages — $4.20 large — and $1.00 + ($0.065 × page count) from 42 to 828 pages, or $1.00 + ($0.08 × page count) large. KDP publishes no premium-color rate for a 41-page book; this calculator prices 41 with the per-page formula, the dearer of the two readings, the same way it reads the 109-page gap in the hardcover tables. Groundwood, which is the same black ink on cheaper and bulkier paper, is a flat $2.23 from 24 to 112 pages — $2.75 large — and $1.00 + ($0.0114 × page count) from 114 to 828 pages, or $1.00 + ($0.0162 × page count) large. KDP publishes no groundwood rate for a 113-page book either, and this calculator prices 113 per page for the same reason. So a 300-page black-and-white book costs $1.00 + (300 × $0.012) = $4.60 to print on a regular trim, and $1.00 + (300 × $0.017) = $6.10 on a large one. Every other store has its own figures in its own currency — see the table above, which now carries both trim columns.

What is the minimum price I can list my KDP book at?

Your minimum list price has to cover the printing cost out of your royalty share. Below the store’s 60% threshold the rate is 50%, so the minimum = printing cost ÷ 0.50; from that price up the 60% rate applies. The threshold is $9.99 on Amazon.com, £7.99 on Amazon.co.uk, SEK 110 on Amazon.se, and so on. If your book costs $4.60 to print, the minimum list price is $4.60 ÷ 0.50 = $9.20. Price below that and your royalty goes negative; Amazon will not let you publish at a price that does not cover printing. The calculator flags this and shows the minimum in the store’s own currency.

How is the Kindle ebook royalty calculated?

Kindle pays either 70% or 35% of the list price, with no printing cost (it is a digital file). You earn the 70% rate when your list price is between $2.99 and $12.99, minus a small delivery cost (about $0.15 per MB of file size). Outside that price band you earn 35% with no delivery cost. Example: a $4.99 ebook that is 2 MB earns ($4.99 − $0.30) × 0.70 = $3.28. The same book priced at $13.99 earns $13.99 × 0.35 = $4.90.

What is the Kindle delivery cost?

On the 70% royalty tier, Amazon deducts a delivery fee of roughly $0.15 per megabyte of your ebook file (US store). For a text-only book of 1–3 MB that is just $0.15–$0.45 per sale. It only matters for image-heavy books with large files. The 35% royalty tier has no delivery fee.

Why is my royalty negative or very low?

A negative royalty means your list price is too low to cover the printing cost out of your royalty share: you are priced below the minimum. Raise the list price until your rate clears printing (50% below the store’s threshold, 60% from it up — $9.99 on Amazon.com). Check the store, too: the same book prints for a different amount in each one, and a price that clears in dollars may not clear in euros or yen. A low-but-positive royalty usually means a high page count (more printing cost) or a low price; raise the price or, for very long books, consider whether the content can be tightened.

Which Amazon stores does this calculator cover?

For paperback, the fourteen stores KDP publishes a printing table for: Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, the euro stores (Amazon.de, .fr, .es, .it, .nl, .ie and .com.be, which share one set of rates), Amazon.pl, Amazon.se, Amazon.ca, Amazon.com.au and Amazon.co.jp. Each one prints and pays in its own currency, and the price at which the 60% royalty starts is a different number in each currency, so nothing here is converted from dollars. Amazon.com.au has no standard-color rate on KDP’s page, so that store offers black & white on standard paper and on groundwood, and no color interior. Hardcover and Kindle are Amazon.com only for now: their per-store rates are on pages this version does not use, and a guessed band would put your book in the wrong royalty tier.

Does trim size affect the printing cost?

Yes, in both formats — KDP’s own page says printing costs vary with trim size, page count, ink and paper. A large trim is anything wider than 6.12″ or taller than 9″, such as 7×10 or 8.25×11. This calculator asks which one you are printing on both the paperback and the hardcover tab and charges that column: a 300-page black-and-white paperback on Amazon.com costs $4.60 to print on a regular trim and $6.10 on a large one, which is $1.50 a copy off your royalty. Trim size also sets your spine width and full-cover dimensions in both formats.

How is the Amazon KDP hardcover royalty calculated?

The same 50/60 split as paperback — 60% of list price at $9.99 and above, 50% below — minus a higher printing cost. Hardcover runs 75 to 550 pages and comes in black ink or premium color (there is no standard color). Black ink books of 75–108 pages pay a flat $6.80 on a regular trim or $7.49 on a large one; from there it is $5.65 plus $0.012 per page (regular) or $0.017 (large) — KDP prints no rate for a 109-page book, and this calculator uses the dearer per-page reading at that length. Premium color is $5.65 plus $0.065 or $0.080 per page across the whole range. Because the cheapest hardcover still costs $6.80 to print, the 50% tier can never cover it: a hardcover always has to be listed above $9.99 to earn anything. The ceiling on Amazon.com is $250.

Is this KDP royalty calculator accurate?

It uses Amazon KDP’s published printing-cost and royalty rates, read September 2026: paperback for the fourteen Amazon stores KDP prints in, hardcover and Kindle for Amazon.com. KDP shows the authoritative printing cost on the pricing screen when you publish, so treat these as close estimates. This version covers paperback (black & white on standard paper and on groundwood in every store, standard color everywhere except Amazon.com.au, premium color on Amazon.com, each in both regular and large trim), hardcover (black ink and premium color, regular and large trim) and Kindle; paperback premium color outside Amazon.com, and per-store hardcover and Kindle rates, are planned additions.
